Those vying to replace two Seattle School Board members who stepped down earlier this year over residency issues will participate in a candidates forum Wednesday night:

The eight candidates continuing as finalists will participate in a forum. The audience will listen as finalists share why they are interested in serving on the board and answer preselected questions by the School Board and School Board Student Members.

The forum is Wed., March 27, 6-8:30 p.m., at Lincoln High School. Lincoln is in the Wallingford neighborhood at 4400 Interlake Ave. N Seattle, WA 98103.

The forum will be live streamed on SPSTV.

Vivian Song stepped down from the School Board in January after complaints about her move outside of the school area she was elected to represent surfaced during her unsuccessful bid to fill the open citywide seat on the Seattle City Council. Lisa Rivera, another board director who moved out of her school area, was also caught up in the controversy and resigned her post.

The resignations left the district’s areas 2 and 4 covering downtown and northwest Seattle without representation on the board.

Under state law, the remaining terms of the vacancies will be filled by School Board appointment. The District 4 position was on the 2021 ballot and has roughly two years remaining, so the appointment will run through the remainder of the present term. Because the District 2 position was most recently on the November 2023 ballot and has nearly a full four-year term remaining, that seat will be placed on the November 2025 general election ballot for election to the remaining two years of the unexpired term, the board said.

The board is expected to vote on the appointments on April 3rd. You can learn more about the process and the candidates at seattleschools.org.
